PG Wodehouse - the Long Exile
Plot
Miranda is the narrator of this documentary which
celebrates the extraordinary life and work of PG
Wodehouse.
Drawing upon extensive research by Robert McCrum,
literary editor of The Observer, who is currently writing
a new biography of the author, the programme examines
Wodehouses career as a journalist, author, lyricist
and librettist, and explores the reasons for the success
of his particular view of England on both sides of the
Atlantic.
The programme interweaves surviving TV and radio
interviews and rare footage of Wodehouse during his time
in Germany, with exclusive interviews with those who knew
him best. It examines newly discovered letters from
devotees such as Evelyn Waugh and Agatha Christie, and
the diary Wodehouse kept while interned by the Nazis.
The programme also features readings from his novels,
excerpts from film and TV adaptations of his work, and
Wodehouse musicals brought to life by Andrew Lloyd Webber
and Tim Rice.
Shot in locations including Wodehouses homes on
Long Island and in Le Touquet, and the site of his
internment camp in Poland, 'The Long Exile'
paints a fascinating portrait of this renowned author..
